短語或詞組(Phrases)是具有一定意義但不構成句子或從句的一組詞。
（一）名詞短語 (Noun Phrase)：指以一個名詞為中心詞構成的短語，在句中的功能相當于名詞。
I really need a new computer.我的卻想要臺新電腦。
I have three close friends. 我有三位親密的朋友。
1. 組成
(限定詞)+(形容詞、形容詞短語、描述性名詞)+名詞+(介詞短語)
The beautiful girl的結構：限定詞+形容詞+中心名詞(girl)
The beautiful girl in red jacket的結構：限定詞+形容詞+中心名詞(girl)+介詞短語
The beautiful girl wearing/dressed in a red jacket的結構：限定詞+形容詞+中心名詞(girl) +分詞短語 (dressed 是形容詞化的過去分詞，因此這里的dressed in 也可理解為形容詞短語)
The beautiful girl who is wearing /who is dressed in a red jacket的結構：限定詞+形容詞+中心名詞 (girl)+定語從句
2. 功能
在句中當作名詞用，一般用作主語、賓語、表語或賓語補足語。
These interesting books are for you.(主語)
這些有趣的書是給你買的。
He is my old friend.(表語)
他是我的老朋友。
He had a big dinner.(賓語)
他吃了一頓豐盛的晚餐。
We call him a great hero.(賓語補語)
我們稱他為偉大的英雄。
（二）形容詞短語(Adjective Phrase)：指以一個形容詞為中心構成的短語，在句中的功能相當于形容詞。
He is tall and handsome.
他很高而且帥。
She is rich but mean.
她很富有但是很吝嗇。
Travelling alone is quite dangerous.
獨自旅游是很危險的事。
1. 組成
The room was awfully dirty.
這屋子太臟了。
It is very hot today.
今天很熱。
The bottle is full of water.
瓶子里裝滿了水。
2. 功能
You have a small but beautiful room. (定語)
你有一個漂亮的小房間。
I think your answer correct and proper.(賓語補語)
我認為你的答案是正確的并且是恰當的。
He is young but clever.(表語)
他年輕但聰明。
（三）副詞短語(Adverb Phrase)：指以一個副詞為中心構成的短語，在句中的功能相當于副詞。
1. 組成
I tried again and again. 我試了一遍又一遍。
He runs extremely fast. 他跑得快極了。
2. 功能
在句中當作副詞用，可以修飾動詞、形容詞或副詞。
She types quickly and correctly.(修飾動詞)
她打字快且準確。
He spoke far too fast. (修飾動詞)
他說話太快了。
