本單元的重點是了解和掌握派生法和轉化法這兩種構詞法。
1．派生法
在一個單詞(詞根)前或后加上一個詞綴，構成一個新詞，這種構詞法稱為派生法。詞綴分為前綴和后綴。加在單詞前的詞綴，叫________；加在單詞后的詞綴，叫________。
(1)前綴
①一般情況下，加前綴不改變詞性，只改變原詞的詞義。
dis表示“否定，相反，除去”(加在動詞前，表示否定意義)。例如：cover遮蓋→discover發現
im表示“不，非”(加在形容詞或副詞前，表示否定含義)。例如：possible可能的→impossible不可能的
②特殊情況下，加前綴改變詞性和詞義。
a表示“向里，離開，加強”(加在動詞或名詞前構成形容詞或副詞)。例如：
sleep (n.&v.)睡覺→asleep (adj.)睡著的
(2)后綴
加后綴構成的派生詞與原詞的詞義有聯系，有些會改變詞性。
①ed, d表示“……的”，加在動詞后構成形容詞；加在規則動詞后構成過去式和過去分詞。例如：
interest使感興趣→interested感興趣的
excite使興奮，使激動→excited興奮的，激動的
②er, or, n, ese, ian表示動作的執行者(加在動詞后構成名詞)、具有某國國籍的人或“從事……的人”(加在名詞后，詞性不變)。例如：
run跑→runner奔跑者；visit訪問→visitor訪問者；America美國→American美國人；Japan日本→Japanese日本人；music音樂→musician音樂家
③ful表示“充滿……的”(加在動詞或名詞后，構成形容詞)。例如：
care小心→careful小心的
④tion加在動詞后，構成名詞。例如：
invent發明→invention發明
注意： 通過加前綴或后綴派生而成的新詞從詞性的變化來看，主要有如下幾種情況：
(1)動詞(Verb)→名詞(Noun)
wait等候→waitress女服務員
build建造→building建筑物
write寫→writer作家
(2)名詞(Noun)→形容詞(Adjective)
cloud云→cloudy多云的
