過去進行時與when和while引導的時間狀語連用
過去進行時常和when, while 引導的時間狀語連用，構成復合句。
My mother was cooking when I got home.
我母親正在做飯，這時我到了家。
My father was watching TV while my mother was doing cleaning.
（那時）我父親在看電視，我母親在清掃衛生
一、when與while的區別
在when引導的時間狀語從句中，謂語動詞可以是延續性動詞，也可以是非延續性動詞。而在while引導的時間狀語從句中，謂語動詞必須是延續性動詞。
We were talking when the teacher came in.
我們正在交談，這時老師進來了。
They arrived when/while we were having dinner.
當我們正在吃晚飯時，他們到了。
二、when引導的時間狀語從句與主句的時態
I was walking in the street when the accident happened.
我正在街上散步，這時這起交通事故發生了。
The accident happened when I was walking in the street.
當我正在街上散步時，這起事故發生了。
[總結]
能夠延續的動詞用過去進行時，不能延續的動詞用一般過去時。
三、while 引導的時間狀語從句與主句的時態
I saw the accident while I was walking on the road.
當我正在街上散步時，我看見了這起交通事故。
My mother was watching TV while my father was reading newspapers.
我母親在電視，我父親在讀報紙。
[總結]
當強調兩個動作同時進行時，主句和while從句都用過去進行時。

Alice: Yes, at about four o’clock yesterday afternoon, I was reading a book in the sitting room. I heard a strange sound from the next room. I went in to look and saw my cat, Pete. He was looking into the fish bowl and trying to get a fish from the bowl!
News reader: And then what happened?
Alice: The fish bowl fell on Pete! I went to pick him up because he doesn’t like water. I took him to the bathroom and dried him!
