Read the article written by a father for a newspaper. What is his family going to sell at the yard sale?
My children are growing up fast. My daughter is 16 and my boy is already in junior high school. As they get bigger, our house seems to get smaller. So we want to sell some of our things in a yard sale and give the money to a children’s home.
We have already cleared out a lot of things from our bedrooms. We have decided to each sell five things that we no longer use. My son was quite sad at first. Although he has not played with his old toys for a long time, he still wanted to keep them. For example, he has owned a train and railway set since his fourth birthday, and he played with it almost every week until he was about seven. And he did not want to lose his toy monkey, either. He slept next to the monkey every night when he was a child. My daughter was more understanding, although she also felt sad to part with certain toys.
As for me, I did not want to give up my football shirts, but, to be honest, I have not played for a while now. I am getting older, too!

Language points
1. We have already cleared out a lot of things from our bedrooms.
我們已經從臥室里清理出很多東西了。
clear v. 清理；清除
clear out 清理；丟掉
e.g. I’ll clear out that closet for you.
我要替你把那個小衣櫥清理出來。
2. We have decided to each sell five things that we no longer use.
我們決定每人出售五件不再使用的物品。
(1)此句中we no longer use是由that引導的定語從句，修飾前面的名詞five things。
(2)句中no longer的意思是“不再；不復”，有時可用not ... any longer或not ... any more替換。
e.g. He no longer lives here.
(= He doesn’t live here anymore / anylonger.)
他不再住這兒了。
3) each在句中對we進行限定，表示“（兩個或兩個以上的人或物中）各自；每個”。
e.g. My sister and I each have an English-Chinese dictionary.
我和姐姐各有一本英漢詞典。
3. My daughter was more understanding, although she also felt sad to part with certain toys.
1) certain adj. 意為“某種；某事；某人”
e.g. He decided to sell his certain books.
他決定賣掉他的某些書籍。
[拓展] certain adj. 意為“確實的，無疑的”
常用結構：
be certain to do sth. 肯定要做某事
be certain of/about sth. 對某事確定、有把握
be certain of doing sth. 有把握做某事
be certain +從句 一定……
e.g. He felt quite certain of success.
他對成功很有把握。
2) part with “放棄、交出” part v. “離開，分開”
e.g. Don’t part with your dream.
不要放棄你的夢想。
4. As for me, I did not want to give up my football shirts, but, to be honest, I have not played for a while now.
1) as for 至于、關于
e.g. And as for us, we are fortunate.
對我們來說，我們是幸運的。
2) to be honest意為“說實在的，說實話”，經常單獨使用，作插入語，用逗號與句子隔開。類似的表達還有to tell the truth “老實說，說實話”。
e.g. To be honest, she is not an honest girl.
說實話，她不是一個誠實的女孩。
honest為形容詞， 意為“誠實的；老實的”
反義詞為dishonest 不誠實的。
e.g. An honest man does not tell lies.
誠實的人不說謊。
3) while n. “一段時間，一會兒”
while還可用作連詞，引導時間狀語從句，意為“當……的時候”，while引導的時間狀語從句中的動詞必須是延續性動詞。e.g.
They chatted away happily for a while.
他們高興地閑聊了一會兒。
He kept in touch with us while he was on vacation.
他在度假期間仍與我們保持聯系。
