What did Jack ask Jill?

Jack asked Jill if/whether she wanted to go with him.

What did the boy ask his mother?

The boy asked his mother when they would have supper.

Presentation

Read the sentences and pay attention to the coloured words.

Could you explain what happened then?

Can you tell me how she’s different?

Could I ask if you’ve mentioned this to her?

Do you know why she treats you like that? 

I did not know who she was.

I asked her why she smiled at me that day.

賓語從句三要素:連接詞、語序、時態

賓語從句的連接詞

1. 連詞that,起連接作用,在從句中不作句子成分,也無詞匯意義,在口語中常被省略。

He knew (that) he should work hard.

2. 連詞if/whether,起連接作用,在從句中不充當任何句子成分,意為“是否”,不能省略,在口語中多用if。

Tom don’t know if/whether his grandpa liked the present.

He asked me whether I was coming or not.

一般情況下,if和whether可以互換,但以下3種情況只能用whether:

① 在不定式前

Whether to go there or not hasn’t been decided.

② 在介詞后

It depends on whether it is going to rain.

③ 與or not連用

They are talking about whether to go there or not.

3. 疑問詞在句中既起連接作用,作句子成分,又有實際意義:

連接代詞:who, whom, whose, what, which   

連接副詞:when, where, why, how

who在從句中作主語、表語;

whom在從句中作賓語;

whose在從句中作定語;

what和which在從句中作主語、賓語、表語或定語;

when, where, why, how在從句中分別作時間狀語、地點狀語、原因狀語和方式狀語。

人稱和時態變化

1. 陳述句變為賓語從句時,要注意人稱和時態的變化,語序不變。 

She said, “I will leave a message on the desk.” 

→ She said she would leave a message on the desk.

2. 一般疑問句和特殊疑問句變為賓語從句時,也要注意人稱和時態的變化,后接陳述語序。

“Where are the tickets?” I asked him. 

→ I asked him where the tickets were.

Summary

Could you explain what happened then?

Can you tell me how she’d different?

Could I ask if you’ve mentioned this to her?

Do you know why she treats you like that?

I did not know who she was.

I asked her why she smiled at me that day.

1. Review the use of the object clause with whether/if and wh-words.
